Crown Lengthening Q&A
What is crown lengthening?
Crown lengthening, also known as gingivectomy, is cosmetic gum surgery that removes excess gum tissue to reveal the full length of your teeth. If you show too much of your gums when you smile or if your teeth appear shorter than usual, this routine procedure can transform the esthetic appearance of your smile.
What can I expect with crown lengthening?
Dr. Ruprecht evaluates your gum and bone tissue to determine the most appropriate plan. She works with your general dentist to create a wax-up model with the most natural tooth shape for your unique smile. Once you have viewed the initial mock-up, she modifies it with you to reach the ideal design with your full approval.
Dr. Ruprecht then creates a surgery template based on the completed design. During surgery, she carefully shapes the gum tissue following the contours of the template.
In cases where bone tissue covers the teeth, Dr. Ruprecht incorporates bone contouring into the procedure to obtain healthy and lasting results. She uses a GeminiTM diode laser to refine the gum contours. In cases where minimal gingival sculpting is needed, she uses a laser for the full procedure. Dr. Ruprecht places sutures when bone recontouring is needed.
What is the recovery process like after crown lengthening?
Even though crown lengthening is an outpatient procedure, it is important to rest and follow directions during your recovery period. You will be given complete instructions for post-operative care that typically include rest, a limited diet, oral hygiene and limited activities for a few days.
Dr. Ruprecht will prescribe pain medication, natural healing supplements and antibiotics as needed. In addition to remaining in contact with you following surgery, she will schedule one or more follow-up visits to monitor your healing and guide the next steps in your treatment plan.
